Another factor is climate. I very rarely water my vegetable plants. Seeds, yes. Plants, no.

My dad used to say that when you don't water, the roots will go deeper to find their own water and it will make the plants stronger because they will have deeper roots.
In the area where I live, everyone waters their vegetable plants. I don't think it's necessary but different people have different ideas :)

The general rule is that plants require one inch of water per week. However, this does not mean watering once per week. That usually doesn't work. Plants require watering about three times a week[b], [/b]but factors like wind speeds, humidity, rainfall, air temperatures, and soil consistency can change this.

Water when the soil feels dry an inch or two into the ground. A deep watering is preferable to a shallow or brief watering. It is better to water seeds frequently and briefly when trying to germinate them. The next step would be to switch to longer, less frequent watering to promote root development and strength.
