So true! I compost everything I can get my hands on.
I also have a great neighbor who gives us manure and other things for the compost pile. 
It's really important to keep on top of nutrients in the soil because once the soil gets poor, it's very difficult to enrich it again.
It's one of those things where you have to prevent a problem from happening.

Planting vegetables in a medium loam is ideal for growing healthy and vigorous plants.
Medium loam is an average soil type with a good balance of being very productive – good nutrient content and ability to hold moisture and air – while requiring the least amount of attention - feeding, composting, improving drainage, and so on.
Vegetables can grow in many soil types, from light sand to heavy clay; soil fertility is essential! Vegetables grown in poor, starved soils will never thrive. The best way to make your soil fertile is to add plenty of well-rotted manure or compost.
