Just recently, I had visitors. I invited them to stay for dinner. I gave them a choice between spaghetti and soup, and they preferred soup.
While I made some soup, I decided to serve some bread with it. I always make my own bread, It is so much healthier than what you buy at the sore!
My visitors were in the kitchen and they watched while I was making the bread dough.
They told me afterwards that I made it look so easy.
The truth is, it IS easy.
Here is how I make bread. I do everything by hand, no breadmaker or anything else involved. I'm old school.
I don't measure much of anything, so I can only give approcimate amounts.
What you need:
- flour
- yeast
- honey
- water
- salt
Yep, that's it!
Grab a large bowl.
Put 3/4 cup of water on the stove, it has to be 'baby bath water warm'.
I measure out the water with a glass measuring cup and after it's warm, I put it back in the measuring cup.
I then add a spoonful of honey (teaspoon)
Add a soup spoon of dry yeast.
Mix it well and throw it all in the big bowl.
Now start adding flour, a but at a time.
Here I use my wooden spoon to mix it up.
After a while, I add some salt, like half a teaspoon.
Keep adding flour and keep stirring until the dough starts to get pretty solid.
Here is where I ditch the wooden spoon and start using my hands. Knead it, and add flour if it gets too sticky. Once you have a nice, non-sticky ball, grab a bread pan, or even a pie tin (I use a pie tin), grease it, and put your dough ball in it.
Now put it in the oven and turn the oven on, but on the lowest setting.
Let it sit for about 10 minutes to rise.
Now turn the oven to 400 degrees.
Bake for about 15 to 20 minutes.
I then turn the oven off and let it sit in there for a bit.
It will be pretty hard, so I take it out of the oven and cover it with a towel, This will soften it up.
Let it cool a bit and cut.
