Fall is an easier time to plant as fruit trees need less watering. Planting in the spring/summer is still acceptable, but more frequent watering is necessary for proper establishment. During this time, mail-order nurseries may sell them "bare roots"—that is, without soil.
Where you live will determine how early you can plant, but the primary consideration is that the ground must no longer be frozen.

Cold climate here and I actually plant my trees in spring indoors (from seeds, like apple trees, pear trees, prune trees, peach trees). I let them grow in the greenhouse during summer and then plant them outdoors in early fall.
This year I'm actually thinking about keeping them in the house for one winter and plant them outdoors when they are in their second year.
Planting the seeds seems to be the easy part. Keeping them alive after they've been plated outdoors is a different story.
